Enclosure realized for the sports club ‘Società Sportiva Rari Nantes Torino’ as part of the redevelopment and expansion of the Municipal Pool of Grugliasco, Italy. The work included the construction of a new swimming pool inserted into a new building adjacent to the existing pool environment. The enclosure built for this installation is a structure raised on two levels with retractable telescopic roof.

The project was developed in collaboration with the architectural studio Pettene

  • Profile: Energy 240, in 6005A-UNI9006-1 aluminium alloy; section 240 x 105 mm for the external profile and 240 x 130 mm for the coupled internal profile.


The enclosure is composed of 8 modules with central opening. The length of the modules is a peculiarity of this enclosure as the special profile Energy 240 has been specially designed to allow for pairing of two or three standard modules of length 2.23 m into a single component in order to decrease the number of necessary elements with a consequent saving of space to the sides of the enclosure. In this case, 8 double modules have been used: 6 of length 3.945 m and 2 of length 4.025 m.

The enclosure rests on two planes at different heights: on one side there is the roof of the existing building and on the other a concrete beam which forms the perimeter of the enlargement for the new pool. The enclosure slides on an extruded aluminium tracks system which guides supporting carriages with fixed and eccentric axis wheels that allow adjustment of the movement and optimal coupling for perfect sliding.

The structure features a toothed pinion and rack motorization system with two gears and three-phase alternating current motors, an electrical control panel with inverter for the adjustment of each motor and radio remote control command of the movement. The two halves of the enclosure can be moved simultaneously or independently and it takes about four minutes to retract.

Each module of the enclosure was divided into two elements for transportation to the construction site, reassembly and installation with the aid of a crane.
